The 10th Tori album sees a return to career defining themes of religion and womanhood. Rumour had it Abnormally...would see a return to the creative high of From the Chorigirl Hotel. In truth, it's closer to the recent American Doll Posse, down to exhausting length (18 tracks). if the music isn't consistently spiky, the themes are. religious doctrine is chastised over Bond violins in Strong Black Vine, flavor pits intolerence versus love; and Maybe California sees Tori pleading with the post Prop 8 Golden State, "Hey Mrs C, please don't jump". Still got it, Mrs A.
Her 10th album. She calls it "audio mescaline."
Motherhood and middle age haven't made Tori Amos any less eccentric. Her Epic contract completed with 2007's American Doll Posse, a conceptual work rooted in Greek mythology, Amos's new label gets another concept album (central theme: "emotional and mental bondage") accompanied by a DVD of silent movie-inspired "visualettes." Abnormally Attracted To Sin is a long haul, but among these 18 songs are some of the best Amos has written, including a jazz-rock odyssey, Lady In Blue, and a dreamy Kate Bush/Massive Attack hybrid, Flavor. Even now, at 45, Amos still sounds like Bush's weird kid sister.

Bond violins... jazz-rock odyssey.. dreamy KB/MA hybrid... JES!

It speaks volumes that the DVD promos included with the deluxe version of this release are being touted as 'visualettes'. Tori clearly hasn't lost her flair for pretentiousness and, regrettably, that's true of the music as well. Toriphiles will be delighted to find a generous 76 minutes of songstuff here but the less committed might never get past the veritable encyclopaedia of tortured vocal affectations that blight the stodgy opening track, Give. The much simpler, jazz-blues-inflected That Guy demonstrates how good she can be when she focuses, but the piano ballad Maybe California feels too much like Tori by the numbers, and the world really doesn't need another song about dope called Mary Jane. Amos is smart and musically gifted but albums like this will surely consign her forever to the bin marked 'Kate Bush-lite'. Johnny Black

Tällä levyllä ainakin Ophelia on semmoinen.. saa nähdä onko muitakin. Viime levyllä se oli Code Red.. Beekeeperillä Mother Revolution.. Scarletilla Strange.. ym ym..
