"The first time I heard that line, I immediately thought of Caton and their parting ways. As her old guitar player, Caton is the one who sprung to mind when she sang "unstrung" (guitar strings). I interpreted in a couple ways:
1.) He manipulated her ("you could always play that one") to get what he wanted when she going through bad times ("girl unstrung")
2.) His music complimented hers well when she was more angry/crazy, but now she's not that "unstrung" girl anymore, and she perceives him as more of a threat
Obviously, it doesn't have to be Caton (to some, it could just as easily be Mark, or anyone), but the images she uses in that song really paint a picture of him, in my mind. For example the "doesn't every boy smoke to cry", bring to mind Caton on stage with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
Apollo's Frock really carries the same themes and brings him up as well, I think, with these lines:
"I have let you eat from the fruits of my tree"
"It feels like these days Our old meeting place In an LA cafe"
"Amid the clashing of swords" (reminds me of YKTR)
"You and your predators were warned If the cubs were drawn in for the last time
You would officially cross my line"
""girl unstrung" I think she's singing about herself. This is kind of a personal criticism of the way she's handling the situation. I think I read on a Tori site that she had an intense disagreement with someone while she was pregnant. It sounds like Tash made her reassess the situation and reach a point of decision with the person. Most people think she's talking about Caton. But Tori's not telling so we don't really know."
From the Ann Powers Interview, 12 JAN 2002
Ann: I mean, I think a lot of your fans would agree that listening to your music creates a place that both feels like a shelter, and also demands a lot. Demands a lot emotionally, not to mention intellectually, figuring out those crazy lyrics you write, Tori! (laughs)
Tori: Well, also it's tricky, too, there's something I'm writing now that -- there was a confrontation that occurred when I was pregnant, and you see, I was listening back to it and I said ooh, that's pretty hard-hitting. If you knew anything about it, you'd know exactly what I'm talking about. And so then I kind of decided, well maybe I'm gonna change things a little. Well, then I listen back to that tape and its just horrible. Chucked that one. Found this other one again by accident, I was looking for something else, and I heard to it again, and it's demanded that story be told. Because this place when I play it, it exists exactly as it did that day. Everything about it. And I know I was able to get out of it and I -- I'm okay, Tash is okay, but there was a moment where that was very questionable. And um....
Ann: Scary place.
Tori: It's a scary place. And so writing that one has -- I'm still writing, I haven't finished, because physically I go through that hyperventilating that was going on that day -- and I think music can do that to you.
